Tree Pit Survey
This Saturday, October 13th, Citizens of Pigtown will be conducting a survey of empty tree pits in the neighborhood. If you are interested in participating, we are meeting in front of the bath house (904 Washington Blvd) at 9:00 a.m., please bring a tape measure and/or clipboard if you have one available. Pairs/small groups of participants will be assigned a small sector of the neighborhood, and be asked to walk the sector noting any tree pits that are currently lacking trees. Basic data will be collected (size of pit, stump present or absent, etc), and door tags/tree request forms will be left at houses adjacent to these empty pits.
We will use the survey information, as well as the completed tree request forms, to submit a comprehensive request to the city to help remove old tree stumps and plant new trees in the pits. We will submit the request in November, and anticipate the new trees will be planted during the spring planting. This will be a first step in acquisition of street trees for Pigtown, and our next project will involve the more complicated task of cutting new tree pits. With a little hard work and patience we will have many lovely young trees throughout the neighborhood!
Citizens of Pigtown thanks The Parks and People Foundation for their assistance with this important project. We hope to get lots of volunteers on Saturday.
