Firefly, where do you live? Next time, try sticking your tongue out at your neighbour. (No, sorry, don't do that, but honestly -- don't you want to?) Please do reconsider leaving for good -- this is a great place to live. If I'm home, you're always welcome to bang on my door -- 1022 W. Barre -- even if something doesn't go wrong. ditto. We're at 109 & 111 Scott and are often out talking to our neighbors. We love neighbors. Come on by.

I'm at 744 McHenry. Maybe if I stuck my tongue out that would get some response. Hopefully, I'll get around your way sometime when I feel more comfortable. I'm too scared to do anything other then park my car and go inside at this point.

Dammit, my response got lost again. I'm really beginning to hate Verizon.
Anyhoo...
None of this sitting in the house cowering nonsense. No indeed. Take the bull by the horns and stake your claim! This is YOUR neighbourhood, too! Being a shrinking violet only lets the bad guys win.
I had a guy come by the coffeehouse the other day "warning" me about gang activity -- I added the quotes because I think his "warning" meant "go away now". In no uncertain terms, I let him have it right there on the sidewalk in front of God and anyone who happened to be passing by on Washington Boulevard. I will NOT be shoved out by crime. Not from my coffeehouse, and not from my home.
They're like dogs. Once they smell fear, you're sunk. If you can summon up enough courage to go outside to the car, you can take the next step. It's hard, but it can be done!!

Was the person warning you someone that was trying to help you out for your benefit or a possible member of a gang? I don't envision me coming back there anytime soon. I am already a paranoid person to begin with and hearing about possible gangs just upsets me more.

The person who was warning me -- I have no idea who he was. Never saw him before. I do know, however, he's an idiot if he thinks he's going to run me off. I have no patience for criminals.

Did you get the impression that the person was telling you that things were going to start happening in the area soon? That is pretty scary. Hopefully, they stay out of Barre Circle.

I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's support, but I found someone to take over my lease so I will no longer be living here. I just can't deal with the stress of always looking over my shoulder and it is easier to forget about what happened when I don't have to walk by the area everyday. Thanks again.

Firefly, it's a shame that you want to move out. I think you'll find that unless you leave Baltimore and move to a smaller city somewhere (like nowhere near Megalopolis), you won't necessarily be any safer. But good luck to you. Everyone has to do what they think is best.
I admire the spirit of Carol. I agree that you can't let them push you around. You don't have to get in their face, but the bad guys need to know that this is our home and we're staying. We bought a house here and have an investment in the community and we have an obligation to improve it.
When your coffee house opens Carol, we'll come by. What we need are more peole willing to gamble on the future of this area. I intend to keep my business local whenever possible to help those who have a stake here.

Well sometimes my spirit (and my big yap) get me in hot water...
But I do feel that if everyone starts moving away, it sends a message to the criminals (who, in my humble opinion, are nothing but cowards) that it's okay for them to behave in this manner, when it is most definitely NOT okay.

As some of you know, last summer I moved up a few blocks to Hollins St. I have a noticed a huge difference in crime on this street (there isn't any) and I think the biggest factor is the UMB Police Force. They drive and walk my street 24/7. They even walk through the allies. They are very nice and professional. Because of the huge investment that the university has made on this side of MLK we will continue to see more of them. Perhaps they would consider expanding their protrol route to cover Barre Circle. Not sure who you would talk to about this, but its worth an ask. Again, UMB has invested millions in this neighborhood and will not stand for gang activity and convenience crimes.

I think it's ironic that so many people in our neighbourhood are UMD students and doctors, yet the police are never around. (UMD police, I mean.)
Apparently something happened last night -- a car was broken into? -- not sure -- but the police were knocking on doors asking if anyone saw anything. I was already in bed, so I didn't go downstairs to see what was going on.

I'm a student at UMB and I've been to several meetings where the police and deans talk about crime. My understanding is that the UMB police have very defined areas that they are "allowed" to patrol by the city police. Technically they're not really allowed to patrol in Ridgley's Delight, where many many students/faculty live. They work with the city police if a crime happens in outside areas to one of the students, but I think that's all they're allowed to do.

Cara, I think you're right -- they have definite boundaries and can't go past their designated areas. I guess it's for the best, otherwise we'd have every law enforcement group tripping over the city police, and even less would get done.

I was attacked at my home on Ryan Street (new town homes of Camden Crossing) on Friday November 10, 2006 at 9:30am. The assailant is a black male in mid 20's, 6'2" and 160 lbs Heroine junkie in construction-worker attire. He first stole my bike in the garage and turned off the main electricity switch to the house. Then he returned and broke down the entrance from the garage and met me in the second floor. He threatened me with a weapon and took my wallet and completely emptied out my jewelry box with everything placed in a black bag that was in the bed room he took off on feet. I, fortunately, was not injured.
I called the police right away and the 911 dispatcher did not have our house on the city map. Several calls later, the police finally arrived 45-50 minutes later. The detectives and the crime lab people also had a hard time finding the place. There is no street sign to my house and the management does not feel that it was their responsibility to notify the city of this new construction and place proper signs in the street for the ambulance, police and fire departments to find us.
We moved to camden crossing off of Scott street in July of 2006 and we had taken all precautions to take care of ourselves and our property. Now, we are notifying all of our neighbors of this incident. Please pass on this information to everyone in this neighborhood. We don't want to be a victim to the city's drug problem and we have to stand together to ask for more measures to help keep us safe. God knows that we pay way too much tax in this area and at least they should be able to find us on the map!

I am very very sorry to hear that this happened to you, and horrified at the way it was handled. I hope you have support to help you get through this - if this happened to me I am sure it would take a long time to recover. Please let me know if anything I can do. I am a neighbor in Roundhouse Court.
