I know this is not an important issue compared to home break-ins and such, but in case some of our newer residents frequent this board, I wanted to post a reminder. You are required to put your trash and recycling out in front of your own house, only. Not your neighbor's house, or at the end of the block, or on the adjacent street because it is closer to your back door than your own street. Not in front of what you think is an empty lot that no one cares about.
More than one resident of Lombard street has been putting their trash and/or recycling in front of our house and yard (lot) on Scott Street. If you are reading this, please stop. We've tried talking to our neighbors and leaving notes when we know who is doing it, but it keeps happening, usually on the wrong day of the week and in the wrong or in no container.
The only people who should be putting any trash or recycling on the part of Scott that butts up to the backs of the Lombard houses are us and our immediate next door neighbor at 107. No one else lives on that part of the block before the alley (103 is abandoned and the other house is 833 W Lombard).
Thanks!

Hey everybody The city seems to be changing their recycling program (hooray). They are starting a "single bin" program whereby all items are picked up on one day as long as they are in city approved bins. The bins will be available this weekend at half price (as well as later on), so if you get a chance you might want to pick one up. Here is a link that discusses the upcoming changes (click on the single bin kick-off link to find out about getting a reduced price bin this weekend). www.cleanergreenerbaltimore.org/recycle.htmlHope this helps our neighborhood become even cleaner! Soooo disappointing. I went to the skills center on route 40 and waited, outside in the cold, for about 45 minutes and was not halfway through the line. I had to leave as I had my daughter with me and she was freezing. Everyone with children ended up leaving.
I don't understand the city's goal here - are they trying to increase or decrease recycling rates? Because requiring people to recycle in a certain bin, for which you have to wait in the cold outside for an hour and a half, makes no sense. The problem with recycling was not the containers, it is the fact that you have to hang onto it for two weeks and remember which days to put it out. Once-a-week pickup would solve this problem.
I am so frustrated and disappointed with the city right now. If they really want people to recycle, they need to distribute one bin to every household automatically. We are already paying for them - tax dollars got those bins made.
This is ridiculous.

I had the same horrible experience trying to get my bin on Saturday. Here I thought they would make much easier. I decided I would rather pay full price for the bin than wait in that insane line for who knows how long. I actually don't mind paying for the bins, in East Lansing (my hometown) we had to buy recycling bins and trash cans (or bags) from the city. I do find it extremely annoying, however, that purchasing the bin could be such a hassle-heck I'm not even sure how one goes about buying a new bin at regular price (I have no idea where to go, that is). However, it has come to my attention that the WPNPC may have some bins available to pigtown residents (paid in part by an EPA grant). As soon as I figure out how to get one, I will post the information here. I hope my original post didn't leave too many of you out in the cold on Saturday...SORRY NICOLE!

Oh Miranda, it is not your fault at all! Please don't apologize. I'm sorry you had the same experience; thank you for posting the info about the free bins this saturday.

Hi,
I just wanted to point out that you do not need a special bin from the city for recycling. Here's what the website states:
When setting out single stream recycling, citizens have 3 options: purchase and use a recycling bin; use a container of choice that is clearly marked as recycling material; or use a cardboard box.

I read that too, after my rant about it. oops. My husband wrote to the mayor and suggested that a solution would be for the city to source recycling stickers that can be applied to a bin of choice, and to offer lids for the cans they are providing. I have been trying to find big recycling stickers online with little success, but I think that would be a good solution for our house. I might just paint the word "recycling" on the can we use now and see if that works.
