After reading so much positive press about our neighborhood elementary school, I took a visit over there to check things out and to see how community volunteers could get involved. In case you missed the accolades, here's a quick re-cap:
- recently awarded the prestigious Blue Ribbon award which goes to only the top schools
- outperformed surrounding county schools in this year's Maryland School Assessments
- city's 2nd highest rated elem school in terms of % of students scoring at the advanced level of the Maryland School Assessments (second only to Roland Park Elementary)
[glow=red,2,300]There are some great things happening at this school![/glow] And, there are plenty of opportunities for us to become involved as a community. I will be helping to coordinate our volunteer efforts with the school so, even if you have just 1 hour to give, let me know and we'll put your time to good use.
Here are some volunteer opportunities (we need project leaders and volunteers):
November 14-16: American Education Week- need speakers for Career day (11/14) and classroom readers for Reading Day (11/15)
February: Black History Month- need drama enthusiasts to help with play
May:
(1) Cotillion-need person to work with local businesses/Main Streets program to involve businesses in this program and male mentors for preparation classes
(2) Spirit Week- lots of opportunities...Parade of Nations day (talk about your ancestry/home country), Pep Rally (got talent? need demonstrations: dance, gymnastics, roller derby )
Ongoing: tutors and mentors needed
Let's get involved and bring together the residents, businesses and churches in our community to support our school. There will be opportunities during the school day, before and after and on the weekends. If you can spare some time, it will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
