Streetchie, good job! I'm sorry you had to go through that, but you handled it well.

can you tell us where you got the mace from? Nobody in the area seems to sell any pepper spray/mace anywhere (at least that I could find when my wife looked a few years ago)...although we didn't really try that hard, but now it may be a good idea to keep my wife and myself 'armed'.

Umm, another incident to report.
I just talked to my neighbor Dan, and around 1:00 this afternoon his house was broken into - for at least the 2nd time this year. The perps used the safety bars on the windows - get this - as a crude LADDER to access the open window on the 2nd floor. Thankfully an alert neighbor called the police - and maybe the dogs in the house acted as a deterrent.
More info as it becomes available. Nobody was hurt.

Brian, where do you live? I have a neighbour Dan who lives across the street from me...on Barre Street. We were home at 1:00. In fact, my son had a doctor's appointment today at the University, and we were walking right through Barre Circle on our way home at that time -- maybe a few minutes before.
Good grief -- that's just creepy.
I don't recall seeing anyone who didn't belong here...

Carol, I live on Scott St. (217) and Dan lives behind me, on the 200 block of Otterbein, facing the park.

does anyone know what happened last night between 9 and 10? there were lots of sirens, police helicopters scanning the neighborhood and to top it off, my husband was offered crack by two men while walking our dog... just "normal" activity for baltimore city or has anyone heard that it was something else?
this rash of crime is getting pretty ridiculous now.

I'm not sure what is going on, but there is definitely a spike in activity. My sister lived here for two years before I moved in. The most that happened was a broken car window. Unless I just wasn't aware of it because I was only visiting and maybe she kept it quiet. A big concern for me is the amount of traffic that is now using the cutout from MLK onto McHenry and then walking down Barre St. Every morning when people are going to work or school someone pops out from this area. This has happened to me every morning this week, but I have been parked right out front, but I get nervous when I see students walking by themselves. I've been staying in my car a little before leaving just to see what people are doing. Based on what happened to me before when I was walking to my car this makes me very suspicious. I just feel like are area is being targeted and that people are coming by in the morning to catch people on their way to work and maybe not paying attention because they are putting items in their car.

We've always had crime, particularly property crime. It seems to come in waves, though, and never just a steady stream of crime. I remember....I think it was two summers ago....it was a constant stream of break-ins (houses and cars) and a few muggings -- and then it stopped -- ironically, right around the time that school started for the year, at the end of August/early September. And then it was quiet for a while...and now this year's crime wave. Firefly, I'm glad to see you're still here.

I just came back several weeks ago. I was never able to find anyone to take over the lease so I got tired of paying rent for a place I wasn't living. Unfortunately, I am still very paranoid about walking further then right in front of my house and try to avoid that at all costs, but hopefully it will get better.

Firefly, you said something very important in your last post, and I think should be emphasized:
and maybe not paying attention
Paying attention to one's surroundings at all times is one of the best ways to avoid being a crime victim, or at the very least -- an excellent way to make sure the criminals are caught.
Criminals are lazy -- they don't want to have to work for whatever it is they're after, so they'll usually take the path of least resistance. Paying attention with a "I have my eye on you" vibe can sometimes be the difference between being a victim and being passed over for someone else.

I'm coming in really late to this conversation and have to say I'm disturbed and disheartened by all of the stories. I'm so sorry to hear about what has happened to some of you and your family members! I guess I was a bit naive when we first moved in (April), either that or it just sounds like things are escalating right now.
I came home last night to hear that our neighbor (Ryan St. in Camden Crossing) had been mugged at gunpoint in her home. The guy broke into her garage somehow, cut the power to the house so the alarm wouldn't go off, then proceeded in through the door to the house. It was mid-day and she happened to be home. He held her up at gunpoint and took everything of value from her home. She said he was dressed in a construction outfit (orange vest with reflector strips and a hard hat) and that after she reported it to the police they informed her there have been other similar incidents in our neighborhoods from a guy with the same description. Now that she mentioned the story to me, I have seen a guy that fits that description walking around our neighborhood during the day. I just figured he was a real slow worker without much supervision. DUH!
Luckily she is okay, but I can't imagine how scary that would be. I figured "being alert" while out on walks to the car or down the street would be necessary, but not while in your own home.
I work from home during the day on many days so it is a bit scary to me to think that our homes are targets during the day. I have seen teens walk past our alley during the day and peer into the sliding glass doors as they walk by. We have a big scary-looking (but very friendly) american bulldog, so when they see her and me in the office they tend to look away and keep walking. I never have reported it because I don't want to assume the worst of every teenager I see in our neighborhood and I've never seen anyone doing anything incriminating so I've never had a reason to call.
Sorry to ramble on. I guess the bottom line is that I really believe in sticking with this neighborhood and doing whatever we can to address the crime issues, so I would certainly be up for any community forums on the topic. I know the rest of us in Camden Crossing would as well so please include us in any flyers about meetings. I'd be happy to help distribute them if needed.

Oh my goodness. I don't know why I am so stupid as to feel safe in our neighborhood. I am obviously wrong.
