I know its not in our immediate backyard; however, in a trek to the SoWeBo Festival last Sunday, we learned two new restaurants are to open. The first place (a pizzeria) had a stand at the festival in which they were selling by the slice - it was delicious! For those pizza critics, I would say it was a step above Thirsty Dog and comprable, but in a different way, to Iggies. The actual establishment looks like it will have a nice atmosphere; brick walls, tin ceilings and big windows! The entrepaneurs were very nice and said their product will be more of a "gourmet" pizza - and best of all, for those not wanting to step out into our crime ridden streets - they deliver! Opening date is July 1. www.zellaspizzeria.com/The second place is on the other side of the market and will be Vietnamese Pho. I peered in the window of the double-wide storefront business and was shocked by exposed brick arches - this place also looks to have great potential on the atmosphere scale. They have alot of work to do, but plan on opening in the Fall of this year.

Funny -- I was just talking to someone about this today. VERY exciting news!! I can't wait for the pizza place -- Baltimore has been a really disappointing city for pizza, especially considering that we have a Little Italy. Pfft.

We are excited, too. The pizza seemed a lot like Brick Oven Pizza in Fell's Point....maybe a little better. Pho place looked pretty sweet, as well.

My wife and I went to Zellas last night for the first time and were blown away. I haven't been inside that building in years, but its as nice as I remember. The pizza and staff are superb. Give 'em your business!! Support local businesses.

I am typing with one hand and eating the most delicious pizza with the other. I ordered the spinach and artichoke pizza, and it's the best pizza I've had since moving here to Baltimore 7 years ago. FINALLY we have good pizza delivery!!! No more bad chain pizza!!!! Oh -- meant to add... the delivery arrived pretty quick, too. I think around 35 minutes or so...and the driver was super-friendly. I'm in pizza heaven.

I had to chime in again about Zella's -- this is the third time I've ordered from there, and AGAIN, the pizza was excellent. I also ordered a Greek salad, which was really good. (They're generous with the dressing...which I'm pretty sure is house-made.) The person who took my order apologised and said it would be a 45-50 minute wait...which wasn't a problem at all -- and it was nowhere near that long. Maybe 30 minutes and the doorbell rang.
I'm so happy they opened! If you haven't ordered from them, please do! Or go there, as I hear it's really a pretty nice place inside.

I agree! We've eaten there twice and gotten delivery once, and everything has been excellent.

Any word on when the Vietnamese place is going to open? I'm looking forward to that one, too.

I haven't heard. What is the bistro on the caddy-corner side of the market from Zellas? Anyone been there?

Actually, the Baltimore Sun did a little write up of the Bistro today as one of the top ten restaurants you probably don't know about. Here is the link, and what they wrote: weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/dining/reviews/blog/2007/07/top_ten.html#more*The Bistro, 31 S Arlington Ave., Hollins Market area. This tiny spot has four or five tables inside and a couple out. The owner does all the cooking and serving herself, so go with the flow here. Some dishes are African-inspired; but the offerings are eclectic, leaning toward vegetarian (with exceptions like chicken with mango). Fresh herbs are a signature. Sunday there was a jazz brunch with live music -- all you could eat for $25.

Sounds wonderful -- I'll definitely give it a try -- thanks for posting the review. I definitely can relate to the "does all the cooking and serving herself"...I'm okay with that. :-)

What's the quickest walking route to Hollins Market? I tried it once and got hopelessly lost in a bad block, and had to turn around and go home. Yes, I am direction-challenged.

Carol - Thats a tough one. You can either go left onto Lombard and then make a right at the sign directing you to Hollins Market. You can also walk to Hollins street (one block north of Lombard) and make a left - this only works when walking because Hollins Street disappears into a playground and the reappears two blocks before the Market. If you want to company for the walk you can always pester Michael or myself.
